Platelet, blood donors needed

CLEVELAND- The American Red Cross is facing a winter blood shortage and is pleading for blood and platelet donations. The cancelations resulted in over 5,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected.

"We especially need donors with B negative and O negative blood".

Because of the loss of donors, the Red Cross has seen more than 28,000 fewer donations over the last two months, and is in urgent need of blood and blood-platelet donations.

January is National Blood Donor Month - one of the most challenging times of year to collect enough blood and platelet donations to meet patient needs. RapidPass can now be completed on mobile devices and through the Blood Donor App.

Many donors have planned to take part in the day's collection with an appointment, but walk-ins also will be taken on Monday. O-negative, the universal blood type that's always in high demand, can be given to patients of any blood type.

The RED25 program is aimed at uniting workplaces, community groups, schools and universities across the country to save lives through blood donations.

"The need is constant, and hospital patients don't get a vacation from blood transfusions, " explained Red Cross Communications Manager Sue Thesenga.

Type AB: The plasma type that can be transfused to nearly everyone and can be donated through a platelet or plasma donation, where available, or during a regular blood donation. She says blood is a perishable product, and you can donate every 56 days.

Eligible donors with types O, A negative and B negative blood are urged to make a Power Red donation, where available.
