Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Thursday

If you live anywhere along the U.S. East Coast, brace yourself for what is about to come: a nor'easter that forecasters are calling a "bomb cyclone".

The storm passing over DE in the coming days is expected to explode off the New England coast and leave in its wake brutally cold temperatures, heavy snows and violent winds.

ABC NewsThe storm system will begin to strengthen late Wednesday and move up the East Coast, spreading snow into the eastern mid-Atlantic states and southern New Jersey.

"This can happen when a cold air mass collides with a warm air mass, such as air over warm ocean waters", NOAA said.

Major east coast winter storm is expected to bring snow, ice, rain, strong winds, and tidal flooding to coastal locations from the southeast U.S.to New England Wednesday into Thursday.

As bone-chilling cold takes hold of parts of the United States, more ferocious winter weather is on its way.

Early Thursday morning, a powerful winter storm hit New York City. The term refers to a rapid drop in atmospheric pressure, which can intensify a system.

The National Weather Service has already posted a winter storm up the coast of Florida. As the two air masses interact, the Earth's spin will help create a cyclonic effect called bombogensis that will cause air pressure to quickly drop.

Expect another Environment Canada extreme cold warning in the next day or two, with frigid air descending from the Arctic on Friday and into the weekend that could see daytime readings reach a unsafe low of -35 C when the wind chill is factored in.

"It will be massive", National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Maue warned on Twitter Tuesday. The storm will pass offshore with winds up to 40 miles per hour, which will have the most effect on coastal communities, he said. The temperatures in Boston are expected to drop to 27 degrees below the average for this time of year.

"Wind chills will be uncomfortably noticeable (Friday and Saturday), especially as the temperature significantly drops on Friday", said The Weather Network meteorologist Dr. Doug Gillham.
