Brazil Ace Philippe Coutinho Completes £142m Transfer to Barcelona

Barcelona did not reveal the cost of the deal for the 25-year-old playmaker but a person familiar with the details told The Associated Press that the transfer could be worth 160 million euros ($A268 million).

Liverpool released a statement on its website which said: "Liverpool FC can confirm Philippe Coutinho will be leaving the club after a transfer agreement was reached with FC Barcelona, subject to medical and agreement of personal terms".

Coutinho's name briefly appeared on a Nike advert for Barcelona shirts last week before being removed.

"It is no secret that Philippe has wanted this move to happen since July, when Barcelona first made their interest known".

"The relationship we have for him means with a heavy heart we wish him well". "It is his dream and I am now convinced there is nothing left at our disposal to change his mind".

"I think it was inevitable it was going to happen", McManaman said.

It's odd timing for the move as Coutinho can not play for Barcelona in the Champions League this season, having participated in the cup with Liverpool.

The deal will make Coutinho the second most expensive playeer ever, behind only Neymar, who joined PSG from Barcelona last summer for £200 million.

Speculation surrounding Mahrez's City future has been rife this January transfer window and Liverpool are the latest club to be linked to the Algerian as they pick out possible Coutinho alternatives.

Coutinho will not be able to play for Barcelona in the Champions League since he has already featured in the competition with Liverpool in the group stage.
