Jimmy Iovine is planning to leave Apple in August, sources say

Some might say that thanks to Iovine, Apple Music has seen a huge growth with it now boasting more than 30 million subscribers.

Iovine is best known as the co-founder of Interscope Records, a rap music pioneer that branched out to include artists like Lady Gaga and U2. His introduction to the Apple community was when he introduced Apple Music during Apple's WWDC event back in 2015.

Iovine's official title with the popular streaming service was never disclosed by the company, but he certainly helped make a huge impact on the music market with his connections, investments and relationships in the industry. Hits Daily Double and BillBoard reported that Iovine's departure might be timed to his Apple shares fully vesting.

Iovine didn't have have a formal title while leading Apple Music, but the co-founder of both Interscope Records and Beats (a streaming and headphone company Apple acquired in 2014) brought almost unmatched industry savvy to Apple's new streaming service.

Apple Music executive Jimmy Iovine is reportedly planning to depart from Apple in August, according to the latest media reports.

An Apple Music subscription, like Spotify, costs $9.99 per month and plays ad-free music. Last year, there were reports that Iovine would head the company's move into video, but he hasn't had a big role in Apple's original TV shows push, which is supervised by former Sony executives Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, who also report to Cue, notes Recode. He was a key proponent of both the device and the music download service.

Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

He has strong ties to the music industry.
