Scott discusses aid to Puerto Rico hurricane victims at Doral roundtable

"The disaster that hit Puerto Rico was devastating", the senator said.

"In the meantime, any student choosing this option and transferring back to their school in Puerto Rico will not count in the denominator and/or adversely affect graduation rates." for Florida schools, Lyons told superintendents.

For more than three months, residents of the USA territory have been struggling to recover from the Category 4 storm's path of destruction. "We've opened up two relief centers, at the Miami Airport and the Orlando Airport", he said.

Scott said Florida has everything the evacuees need to call the state home.

The state is coordinating with Puerto Rico to get student credits transferred and to get transcripts delivered.

"We're doing everything from helping people get a job to helping them get housing to helping them get into the right schools", Scott said.

"If there is no income, the people can not make payments", said Ricardo Ramos-González, coordinator of a consumer legal aid clinic at the University of Puerto Rico School of Law.

Education commissioner Pam Stewart reached out to her counterpart in Puerto Rico in November to make this arrangement possible. "I know Eric Silagy, their CEO, has been over there quite a bit trying to help them get their power back on because you can't get your economy going without power".

In the first official figures released by the Puerto Rican government since the storm made landfall in September, officials reported that one of the island's 78 municipalities remains totally without power. Full restoration of power isn't estimated to be completed until May.
