Patriots lock up first seed in AFC

Sure, that's cold, but this is also the 50th anniversary of the Ice Bowl, which was played in -15 degree weather with a wind chill of -48. Do the Jets even stand a chance against the Patriots today in their Week 17 season finale?

New England has defeated NY in four straight meetings, and the Patriots (13-3) haven't lost to the Jets (5-11) at home during the regular season with Tom Brady starting since 2006.

Dion Lewis carried the brunt of the Patriots offense, rushing 26 times for 93 yards and a touchdown.

New York, which had recently extended the contracts of Head Coach Todd Bowles and GM Mike Maccagnan, was looking to place a roadblock in New England's plan for playoff home-field advantage.

It wasn't Tom Brady's sharpest game as he went 18-of-37 for 190 yards without targeting tight end Rob Gronkowski at all. Brady closed a potential third MVP campaign with 4,577 yards, 32 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

The win gives the Patriots the number one seed in the AFC playoffs for the seventh time since 2003 and the third time in the last four years.

Leading 7-3 in the second quarter, the Patriots took control of the game.

The offense then hit a cold spell as the Jets harassed Brady and erased Gronkowski with a host of heavy coverages while he still had a full workload. New England got into the end zone three plays later via another 5-yard TD pass, this time from Brady to Lewis.

The Jets would add a field goal in the fourth quarter to make the score 24-6.

James Harrison, signed by New England last Tuesday after being cut by Pittsburgh, had two sacks - on consecutive plays to end the game - and finished with five total tackles and a forced fumble.
