Arctic air moving in this weekend

While Friday was still an extremely cold day by late December standards, there were some improvements. This will drop temperatures for New Year's Day, as Houston wakes up to a low of 29 degrees. This will make it feel like it's only in the teens at Midnight.

EXTENDED: We'll stay in the single digits all day long Sunday with mostly cloudy skies. So, get ready for some very cold weather after today as that frigid air mass settles into our area. As sunrise on Saturday nears, a bit of light snow may develop across the area, especially for points west of the Lehigh Valley.

Temps: A majority of the viewing area could see a period of below freezing temperatures for 2-3 days starting Sunday.

The near-record cold is not going anywhere. A slight (30 percent) chance at some snow flurries in the afternoon, but little to no accumulation is expected.

Temperatures will remain below average through the work week and next weekend so be sure you are prepared.

Sunday (New Year's Eve): Bitter cold with wind chills 10 to 25 degrees below 0.

Unsafe wind chills will likely continue into New Year's Eve night.

A Cold Start to the New Year: The blast of arctic air that comes in Sunday won't just be a quick hit. What a way to ring in 2018...right?!

Low temperatures New Year's Eve will get down below zero and high temperatures on New Year's Day will only be around 10, but the wind chills will make it feel like it's below zero at times. Winds out of the southwest that morning will lead to daytime highs close to 30°, but another round of arctic air will pour in during the afternoon.

Another round of crew members will be ready to work through Friday night and into Saturday morning if road conditions require it, according to a release from the city. The high temperature will be 22, dropping to a low of only 8.
