Henderson County unemployment rate rises slightly

Economists look past the official unemployment rate - that 4.5 percent figure, also known as the "U-3" - to other measures of jobs in this country. Although not all the counties made the top 10 unemployment list, three were lower than Ohio's 4.2 percent unemployment rate and one matched it.

Last month's 5.8 percent unemployment rate is well below the 8.1 percent of November 2016 and by far is the lowest for that month since 1990, according to the state Employment Security Department.

Unemployment rates increased in all 55 counties.

With the exception of one month when it was equal (October 2014), according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, Indiana's unemployment rate now has been below the USA rate for more than four full years.

The unemployment rate in Jefferson County in November was 3 percent, the lowest rate statewide, which was up four-tenths of 1 percent from 2.6 percent in October. Only information, wholesale trade and other services showed a slight drop since November 2016. Private education and health services employment rose by 110 jobs over the month, 60 of those in the health care and social assistance component, the remainder in private educational services. Also, the number of people employed has increased by 300, bringing the labor force to 48,200.

Greg A. Gardner, an associate business professor at SUNY Potsdam, said unemployment typically rises in the winter months in St. Lawrence County as summer businesses close for the season and agricultural work declines. Losses were partially offset by a gain in the Construction (4,900) sector.

Louisiana's mining and logging sector includes the oil and gas industry and it has added 400 jobs, considered the first year-over-year increase since 2014 when the price of oil began to decline.

Warrick: 3.0 percent, up from 2.9 percent.

Weekly averaged, unemployment insurance benefit payments were down 18 percent — from $1.6 million a year ago to $1.3 million for November 2017.

The rates in five of Dubois County's neighboring counties - Crawford, Orange, Pike, Spencer and Warrick - rose in November while the rates in Daviess, Martin and Perry counties remained unchanged.

Crawford: 4.2 percent, up from 4.0 percent.
