Five killed in Moscow as bus drives into pedestrian underpass

The incident occurred near Moscow's Slavyansky Boulevard metro station on Monday afternoon.

AT least four people have been killed and 15 more injured after a bus plunged into a pedestrian underpass in Russian Federation.

At least 15 others were injured.

All those killed in the crash were knocked down by the bus, which had been at a standstill before it drove on to the pavement and careered down the steps of the underpass.

Moscow police said passengers and pedestrians were among those killed in Monday's crash.

Police believe the crash wasn't an intentional attack, but caused by a possible mechanical issue or the driver losing control of the vehicle.

A preliminary examination showed the driver of the bus was sober, news agencies said. Footage shows people scattering as the bus ran down wide steps before being brought to a halt by the tunnel's roof.

The Interfax news agency said that the investigators had confirmed that the incident had occurred as a result of a technical fault with the bus.

Monday was a working day in Russian Federation because Orthodox Christmas is celebrated on January 7, according to Reuters.

Some reports also said that the number of fatalities had risen to five people.

Mayor of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin, took to Twitter to express his condolences to the families and friends of the victim.
