North Korea vows to strike back over U.S. global cyberattack claims

"This move is a grave political provocation by the US aimed at inducing the worldwide society into a confrontation against the DPRK", the spokesman said.

"The attack was widespread and cost billions, and North Korea is directly responsible", Tom Bossert, homeland security adviser to President Donald Trump, wrote in a piece published on Monday night in the Wall Street Journal.

"As we have clearly stated on several occasions, we have nothing to do with cyber attack and we do not feel a need to respond, on a case-by-case basis, to such absurd allegations of the USA", the spokesman said, according to the North's official KCNA news agency.

It is not unusual for Pyongyang to issue harsh rhetoric against Washington and South Korea.

Thursday's warning came amid heightened animosities following the North's test launch of its most powerful missile last month.

The North did not specify what accusation it was protesting, but the reaction came following the recent USA announcement blaming North Korea for the WannaCry malware attack that hit more than 300,000 computers worldwide earlier in the year. Among them is a U.S. accusation that it hacked Sony Pictures in 2014 over the movie The Interview, a satirical film about a plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Investigators in South Korea are looking into North Korea's possible involvement in a heist from a bitcoin exchange that, according to people familiar with the situation, as the regime develops new ways to raise money as sanctions choke off its traditional revenue sources.

Bossert went on to write that the allegation was based on evidence also agreed upon by other governments and private companies.

South Korea also past year accused North Korea of hacking the personal data of more than 10 million users of an online shopping site and dozens of email accounts used by government officials and journalists.

"They will learn from that".

He commented: "WannaCry was really a reasonably sophisticated tool, used rather ineptly".
