Rays Reportedly Trade Evan Longoria To San Francisco

The trade will bring four players to Tampa Bay: outfielder Denard Span, infielder Christian Arroyo, minor league pitcher Matt Crook and minor league pitcher Stephen Woods Jr. San Francisco will pay Longoria salaries of $12 million next year, $12.5 million in 2019, $13 million in 2020, $16.5 million in 2021 and $17.5 million in 2022.

Bochy expects Longoria to bat third or cleanup, and he can already envision Longoria as part of a top infield with Gold Glove shortstop Brandon Crawford, second baseman Joe Panik and Brandon Belt at first. "My hope is nothing but the best for the Rays organization and the Rays fanbase". He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays as the third overall pick in 2006 and played two years in the minors before making his Major League Baseball debut in 2008. As a fan of the game, fan of Longoria, and a baseball purist I would love to see Longoria return to his former glory, but odds seem against that. He hit.261/.313/.424 with 20 home runs and 86 RBIs last season with the Rays, which was his 10th year with the organization.

Aside from having to shell out upward of $15 million for Longoria's services in each of the final three seasons on his contract, the Giants should also be concerned about his status as an aging veteran. His best three seasons happened to be his first three in MLB as he won the Rookie of the Year Award in 2008 and was named to the American League All-Star team in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

As for the Rays, Longoria would have gained full no-trade rights in early April, and so the Rays had to trade him now or risk not being able to move him at all.

It's the type of "creative" trade Evans said the team needed to make at the outset of the offseason, and there's no doubt that San Francisco's situation at third base improves immediately. "For a decade, he's been at the center of all of our successes, and it's a very emotional parting for us all", said Principal Owner Stuart Sternberg.

The Rays have made it clear they intend to cut the team payroll next season.

Longoria hit.261 for the Rays last season with 20 home runs and 86 runs batted in.

The team went 80-82 in 2017, fading down the stretch and missing the postseason for the fourth straight year. He was the third overall selection.

Rays general manager Erik Neander said trading Longoria "was in the best long-term interest of our franchise".
