North Korea to blame for WannaCry cyberattack

The Trump Administration is set to formally name North Korea as the power behind the WannaCry cyberattack that affected hundreds of thousands of computers in 150 countries over the summer.

As a result, the Trump administration will be calling on "all responsible states" to counter North Korea's ability to conduct cyber attacks, and to implement all "relevant" United Nations Security Council sanctions, according to a us official familiar with the matter.

"It was cowardly, costly and careless", he wrote.

Bossert said the finding was based on evidence and that it had been confirmed by other governments and private companies, including the United Kingdom and Microsoft.

Jeanette Manfra, assistant secretary of homeland security for cybersecurity and communication, said that the companies should take additional steps to collaborate with the government to defend against cyber attacks.

The US official said: "What we see is a continued pattern of North Korea misbehaving, whether destructive cyber attacks, hacking for financial gain, or targeting infrastructure around the globe".

A senior administration official told the Reuters news agency that the White House would issue a formal statement of blame on Tuesday.

Bossert said that North Korea must be "held accountable" and stressed the USA would continue to use a "maximum pressure strategy" to counteract any cyberattacks the country could be planning.

"So we don't have a lot of room left here to apply pressure to change their behaviour". "Our adversaries are not distinguishing between public and private so neither should we. government and industry must work together, now more than ever, if we are serious about improving our collective defense".

The U.N. Security Council sanctions on North Korea focus on its activities to develop a nuclear weapon.

"We applaud our corporate partners, Microsoft and Facebook especially, for acting on their own initiative last week without any direction by the U.S. government or coordination to disrupt the activities of North Korean hackers". "It gives them something else to bring to the table". Kim Jong Un's regime denied any connection. In October, the British government publicly declared that it believed North Korea was the culprit. Until now, the USA government has not publicly stated as much.

The official noted that the US government has released technical details of North Korean cyber tools and operational infrastructure, and has worked with other countries to lessen North Korea's ability to conduct further tests or generate illicit funding. -South Korean military plans and the alleged theft of $60 million from a Taiwan bank.
