Putin calls to thank Trump for Central Intelligence Agency tip that prevented terror attack

It is the second phone call between the two leaders since Thursday.

Putin added that his country will also alert the USA if it ever got hold of information regarding a planned terror attack on U.S. soil.

Information provided by the Central Intelligence Agency allowed Russian law-enforcement agencies to prevent a planned attack on the Kazansky Cathedral in Russia's second city of St Petersburg, and arrest the plotters, the Kremlin was quoted as saying.

A White House statement said "terrorists" were captured prior to an attack "that could have killed large numbers of people".

Russian President Vladimir Putin has thanked US President Donald Trump during a phone conversation at the initiative of the Russian side for the intelligence data provided by the CIA that helped detain the terrorists.

"Both leaders agreed that this serves as an example of the positive things that can occur when our countries work together", the readout said.

On Tuesday, FSB chief Alexander Bortnikov said Russian Federation was on alert for the possible return of jihadists from Syria ahead of the World Cup and the presidential election in 2018.

U.S. insight offices have beforehand inferred that Russian Federation endeavored to interfere in the 2016 presidential race with an end goal to enable Trump to get chose.

Three other men were arrested in St. Petersburg on December 14.

Relations between Russian Federation and the USA remain tense. Putin asked Trump to convey thanks to the CIS director and intelligence officers who had obtained this information.

At his annual press conference this week, Putin said allegations of Russian interference in last year's United States election had been "made up by people who are opposed to Trump so as to delegitimize his work".

"The Trump that you see on TV is very different than the real Trump", Putin told reporters at the time.
