Is 'man flu' real?

Dr Sue concluded that based on the existing research, the man flu term was "potentially unjust", citing studies that suggested men were not exaggerating their symptoms.

The latter study held true regardless of underlying heart disease, cancer, chronic respiratory system disease, and renal disease.

CBC News reports that the British Medical Journal has published new research indicating that the "man flu" is a medical condition, not just an opportunity for the men in your life to make you wait on them hand and foot.

Don't doubt it: "Man flu" is real, or so says one Canadian researcher who was "tired of being accused of overreacting".

"The spirit of the issue is quite light hearted and often tackles quirky subjects".

Despite the derisive Oxford dictionary definition of it as "a cold or similar minor ailment as experienced by a man who is regarded as exaggerating the severity of the symptoms", he found there is some truth behind the claims.

In fact, he believes a man's immune is weaker than that of a woman's immune system (possibly due to the effects of testosterone).

He notes there are numerous potential weaknesses in the "immunity gap" theory, including that it doesn't always consider other influences on the flu such as the rates of smoking.

In any case, it has to be said that the (non-peer reviewed) review is a joy to read.

Perhaps, they need to be shown a little more sympathy with scientists confirming that the man flu is real with men suffering more during the common cold than women.

Health officials said that while it's too early to tell how severe this flu season will be, the main strain circulating tends to cause more deaths and hospitalizations than others.

A recent look into man flu suggests that there is a case to be made for it.

"When we hear 'man flu, ' we assume this means all males of all ages", Klein said. "Is it that women are more resilient, that they are able to juggle more when they are ill, or is it that they don't have as severe symptoms?"

Sue said in an interview from his clinic that he made a decision to do the study for a masters level class about a week after he experienced the flu.
