Netflix accused of spying on users after 'creepy' tweet

Dubbed "so bad it's good" by Buzzfeed, Netflix says the film has been so popular 53 people have watched it every day for the past 18 days. Netflix reportedly asked users to pressure elected officials about the legislation, and it was amended in the company's favor in 2013.

Netflix recently conducted its annual Year in Review to assess the viewing habits of users, and this year they've gathered some pretty interesting results.

While the tweet was clearly intended as a joke, it didn't sit well with some customers who found the message "creepy".

Netflix promptly responded: "No you're fine".

Writer Amanda Bell tried to get a quote straight from the horse's mouth late Sunday, asking the company why it was "calling people out like that".

The tweet in question revealed that one user had watched festive flick A Christmas Prince an impressive / worrying (delete as appropriate) 53 times. But what seems to have struck a nerve is that Netflix is using information to share viewing habits publicly.

"A Christmas Prince" isn't the only movie Netflix is tracking.

You can see some of the best responses to the tweet below. The tweet in question got nearly 400,000 likes and more than 100,000 retweets too, so mission achieved.

Even though Netflix hasn't officially responded to the allegations of invasion of privacy, a number of Twitter users have jumped to its defence, stating that its a no-brainer that Netflix knows how many times shows are being watched and who watches them.

"This information represents overall viewing trends, not the personal viewing information of specific, identified individuals", the statement said. But, clearly, some people really like it.
