Sri Lanka minister prevents cricketers from travelling to India

The ODI cricket team was due to leave yesterday, December 04, for the three-match One Day International (ODI) series against India.

The islanders are now involved in a three-Test rubber against India.

Kusal Perera's last appearance for Sri Lanka came in their shock triumph against India during the 2017 edition of the Champions Trophy at the Oval. However, the contest is marred by air pollution issues as the visitors wore masks while playing.

Test skipper Dinesh Chandimal did not get a place in the touring party led by Thisara Perera, who takes over the reins from Upul Tharanga. Earlier in a dramatic action, Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera ordered all nine players boarding to India last night to disembark the plane as they were leaving the country without his approval.

Meanwhile, Kusal Mendis, who was also rested for the ongoing three-match Test series against the Virat Kohli-led side, has been dropped.

Sri Lanka's ODI squad: Thisara Perera (C), Upul Tharanga, Danushka Gunathilaka, Lahiru Thirimanne, Angelo Mathews, Asela Gunaratne, Niroshan Dickwella, Chaturanga de Silva, Akila Dananjaya, Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Pradeep, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Dhananjaya De Silva, Dushmantha Chameera, Sachith Pathirana, Kusal Janith Perera.

"Most players reached the airport around 9pm on Monday".

The Minister said, the team was leaving the country without his approval, a blatant violation of the country's Sports Law which requires the incumbent Sports Minister's approval.

All-rounder Asela Gunaratne and opening batsman Danushka Gunathilaka return to the Sri Lankan side that has lost 21 one-day games this year and won just four.
