Embattled Michigan Rep. John Conyers announces retirement

Now facing multiple allegations of sexual harassment, veteran Congressman Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., announced he is retiring today.

Conyers told a Detroit radio show this morning that "I am retiring today", though he is effectively resigning.

Conyers" attorney Arnold Reed told the Detroit Free Press the new allegations from Grubbs are "another instance of tomfoolery from the mouth of Harvey Weinstein's attorney'.

John Conyers told a Detroit area radio show that he'll step down from his seat in Congress Tuesday and publicly endorsed his son to replace him once he leaves Capitol Hill.

Conyers, the longest-serving active member of the House, left Washington last Tuesday amid reports that some other members of the Congressional Black Caucus, which he co-founded, were urging him to resign to protect his legacy as a civil rights icon.

Ian Conyers, the grandson of Conyers's brother, plans to run for his seat, setting up an intra-family contest.

Conyers, who was first elected in 1964, easily won re-election past year in the heavily Democratic 13th District.

Following these accusations, House minority leader Nanci Pelosi eventually asked Conyers to step down, as did Rep. James E. Clyburn.

According to Grubbs' statement, Conyers called her and Brown the "Big Leg Cousins", and once came out of the bathroom of his home completely naked in front of Grubbs. That was followed up by calls for resignation by three of the other four Democratic members of the U.S. House from Michigan - Reps.

He added that he believed his great-uncle's constituents in MI would continue to support him and the rest of the family "as we continue to fight, as we have for leading up to a century".

Conyers, has admitted to paying a settlement to a former staffer but denies her sexual harassment allegations.

"My legacy can't be compromised or diminished in any way by what we are going through now", Conyers said.

"This goes with the issue of politics". The House Ethics Committee has already launched an investigation into the allegations, but such probes often take months, if not years, to complete.

"Witnessing Rep. Conyers rub women's thighs and buttocks and make comments about women's physical attributes was a regular part of life while working in the Office of Rep. Conyers", Grubbs said in the affidavit.

Republican congressman Joe Barton separately announced last week he would not seek re-election after a nude photograph of him taken while he was separated from his wife circulated online. He's been re-elected 25 times since and is the longest-serving current member of Congress, and the fourth-longest serving member of the House in history.

"I think that we lose our moral authority if we also don't call out those we love who have done things that are bad", said Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash. He will now be leaving the seat he's held since 1965.
