Jury: Mexican man not guilty in San Francisco pier killing

The bullet's trajectory, which ricocheted off the pier's surface before hitting Steinle in the lower back, appears to support the claim that Garcia Zarate was not pointing the gun at her directly when it was sacked. Again, I'm not suggesting that necessarily makes the murder, I just don't understand how his handling of the weapon does not make him culpable for her death even if you assume the shooting itself was an accident.

During the presidential race, then-candidate Donald Trump cited the killing as a reason to toughen US immigration policies.

The father of a woman who was shot and killed on a San Francisco pier said he was shocked when a jury acquitted a Mexican immigrant accused of murder in the case.

While the jurors didn't hear evidence regarding Zarate's immigration status, the shooting came roughly three months after a San Francisco jail released him despite federal immigration authorities' request he remain detained before his deportation.

Kathryn Steinle, 33, died in her father's arms when she was shot on July 1, 2015, while they and a family friend were strolling along Pier 14 in the city's tourist-friendly Embarcadero district.

The Bureau of Land Management previously said that the gun belonged to one of its enforcement rangers and was stolen from a federal agent's auto. Under local sanctuary city rules, local law enforcement won't hold a person beyond the term of their incarceration. When he was released, ICE sent him to San Francisco on March 26, 2015, for a 1995 warrant accusing him of selling $20 worth of marijuana. In the aftermath of the shooting there was a lot of finger-pointing among local officials.

Trump signed an executive order to withhold funding from sanctuary cities, but a federal judge recently blocked it in a lawsuit from two California counties, San Francisco and Santa Clara.

President Donald Trump said during the campaign that Steinle's death was another reason the United States needed to build a wall on its southern border and tighten its immigration policies. In reality, she was shot only once.

The bullet that felled Steinle ricocheted off the pier's concrete walkway before it struck the victim. "He took the life of a young, vibrant, beautiful, cherished woman by the name of Kate Steinle", she said.

"My opponent wants Sanctuary Cities".

The case spotlighted San Francisco's "sanctuary city" policy, which limits local officials from cooperating with USA immigration authorities. Freya Horne, chief legal counsel to the county sheriff who runs the jail, told CNN that he was let go because there was no legal cause to detain the suspect. The Department of Justice will continue to ensure that all jurisdictions place the safety and security of their communities above the convenience of criminal aliens.
