Trump administration to end provisional residency protection for 50000 Haitians

Moreover, the Executive Branch has appropriately extended the TPS designation because of the extraordinarily hard living conditions that persist in Haiti and the Haitian government's temporary inability to absorb thousands of people back into the population. Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, is still recovering from the quake, despite claims from DHS that "significant steps have been taken to improve... stability" in Haiti.

If TPS is not extended, Haitians sent home will face dire conditions, including lack of housing, inadequate health services and low prospects for employment.

Hundreds of protesters are rallying Tuesday afternoon in front of President Donald Trump's Florida resort, the Mar-a-Lago, after his administration decided late Monday night to end immigration protections for nearly 59,000 Haitian immigrants.

But the official, one of several authorized to brief reporters, said that Acting DHS Secretary Elaine Duke, after extensive research and input from USA and Haitian government officials, as well as experts, had "assessed overall that extraordinary temporary conditions" that justified the designation in the first place, "had sufficiently improved such that they no longer prevent nationals of Haiti from returning".

The New York Times reports that about 350,000 people benefit from the TPS program, and that "Those with temporary protection constitute about half of the estimated 110,000 Haitians living in the United States without permanent permission" and that Haitians with TPS are parents to almost 30,000 US-born children. We must remain committed to those principles and stand with our neighbors in Haiti as they tackle their challenges. An official said Haitians in the country who were displaced by the natural disaster had decreased by 97 percent from its 2010 peak and that a Haitian government was in place after two years of an electoral impasse.

"Significant steps have been taken to improve the stability and quality of life for Haitian citizens, and Haiti is able to safely receive traditional levels of returned citizens", the statement added.

The temporary status covers some 435,000 people from nine countries ravaged by natural disasters or war, who came to the US legally or otherwise.

Ms Duke chose to terminate the special status after a United States review of the conditions in Haiti found the country had made considerable progress, a senior official with President Donald Trump's administration told a briefing.

The decision to end TPS for Haitians is part of Mr Trump's broader efforts to tighten restrictions on immigration, and comes despite calls from even some fellow Republicans to continue the relief.

Boston has the nation's third largest Haitian community.

Officials said Monday that the political climate in Haiti had stabilized.

But critics of the move say those conditions haven't improved almost enough to force Haitians to return home. They work. They pay every tax except the federal income tax.

According to Monday's announcement, "the termination of TPS for Haiti will be delayed 18 months" in order to ensure a smooth transition.

Haiti faced further devastation in October 2010, when Hurricane Matthew brought widespread devastation to the island nation.
