Trump Returns North Korea to List of State Sponsors of Terrorism

Trump accused North Korea of "repeatedly" supporting worldwide terrorism, "including assassinations on foreign soil". "Putting them back on accomplishes nothing", Lt. Col. Eric C. Anderson, a retired U.S. Air Force Intelligence Officer who spent most of his career focusing on North Korea, told Newsweek". Also, it warns that it faces the hostility and the threats of the joint military exercises of the United States and the Republic of Korea in the Korean Peninsula.

The designation came a week after Trump returned from a 12-day, five-nation trip to Asia in which he made containing North Korea's nuclear ambitions a centerpiece of his discussions.

During a fiery speech in South Korea, Trump described North Korea as an out-of-control country led by Kim Jong Un, whom he cast as a maniacal and deranged man.

"As we take this action today, our thoughts turn to Otto Warmbier and others affected by North Korean oppression", Trump continued, underlining the legal case for the designation.

Putting North Korea back on the USA list of state sponsors of terror ups the ante in Trump and Kim Jong-un's public battle, which has sometimes veered toward the personal.

Relations between the USA and North Korea have been fraught ever since President Trump took office.

At the request of Warmbier's family, six Democratic and six Republican senators later urged the State Department to consider reinstating North Korea to the list. Countries placed on this list are determined by the secretary of state to have "repeatedly provided support for acts of global terrorism" and can face economic consequences as a result.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Rep. Ed Royce applauded the administration's decision to re-list North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism on Monday.

Such a designation carries significant sanctions against the country's ability to receive United States foreign assistance, puts a ban on defense exports and sales. That's when the North was removed in a bid to salvage a deal to halt its nuclear development. With Iran, Sudan, and Syria also being on the list administered by the State Department, exactly what does being a state sponsor of terror mean?

North Korea said last week that it has no intention of ending its nuclear program, North Korea's Ambassador to the UN Han Tae-song.

"The North Korean regime must be lawful".
