Arab League delivers harsh criticism of Iran, little action

"The decision of the Arab League on Iranian intervention today was historical and sends a clear message on the effectiveness of joint Arab action", Dr Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, said late on Sunday. He further said, "Any leniency in dealing with their policies would only encourage them more, so we must stand together", Jubeir said, referring to Iran.

They said they planned to "brief" the U.N. Security Council on Iran's destabilizing policies in the region, particularly its support for Shiite rebels in Yemen, with a view to submit at a later stage an anti-Iran Arab resolution.

Allies of Hizbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, which has members in Lebanon's government, appeared to defend the organisation after it was roundly condemned at an Arab League meeting on Monday.

"No man from Lebanese Hezbollah had any part in the firing of this missile or any missiles fired previously", Nasrallah said.

Riyadh has been bogged down in the war it launched against Iran-allied Houthi rebels in Yemen in 2015. Saudi Arabia called it an Iranian aggression against its territory.

Both Iraq and Lebanon were represented at the meeting by senior diplomats, not their foreign ministers.

On Sunday Arab League members adopted a resolution saying they would hold the "terrorist Lebanese Hezbollah. responsible for supporting terrorism and terrorist organisations in Arab countries, with modern weapons and ballistic missiles".

The Lebanese envoy to the Arab League, Antoine Azzam, made carefully weighed comments at the meeting that reflected his country's delicate religious and ethnic balance.

"The Iranian threats have gone beyond all limits and are pushing the region toward a unsafe precipice", Abul Gheit added. PM Saad Hariri, a Sunni leader belongs to Future Movement. Many Lebanese, including President Michel Aoun and Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, have said they believe Hariri resigned under Saudi pressure. United States weapons drop to terrorists was also caught in camera in Iraq. Syria and Iraq have been alleging these countries for their hand-in-glove role in spreading terrorism in the region.

Hizbollah, which was formed by Iran's Revolutionary Guards and still receives financial and militarily assistance from Tehran, fought Israel's occupation of Lebanon in the early 1980s.

"That doesn't mean they agree to the escalation of Iranian interference in various Arab countries, but paradoxically it was the incompetence and the division among those Arab countries that was the main factor why Iran is able to expand its influence in the region", added Bishara.
