Lewis Hamilton says Formula One teammates robbed in Brazil

The four-time world champion, who has a 15-point advantage over Bottas in the battle to finish as runner-up to Hamilton, said: "I'd love to be ahead".

Members of Lewis Hamilton's Formula 1 team have been held up at gunpoint and robbed on the eve of Sunday's (12 November) Brazilian Grand Prix.

And previous year a Mercedes team member was held up at gunpoint in Mexico while travelling from the airport to his hotel.

"One minibus was robbed at gunpoint", a Mercedes spokesperson said.

This is the first time Hamilton has gone out in Q1 since Belgium 2016 - 27 races ago. In a statement, Mercedes said, "Valuables were stolen but everybody is safe and uninjured which is the main thing".

Hamilton's fellow Brit Jenson Button escaped a "terrifying" armed attack on his vehicle in the same city in 2010. Meanwhile personnel from the FIA, the sport's governing body, were also caught up in a separate incident, but escaped unharmed.

Hamilton called on Formula One and the teams to "do more".

Mechanics and other staff travel to and from the track by minibus and are advised against wearing branded team clothing away from the circuit.

He grouses, "This happens every single year here". In 2016, ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix, a chauffeur-driven vehicle was looted by a gunman as a team member was being transported to the hotel from the Mexico airport.

The Brazilian Grand Prix is one which sits fondly in the minds of most due to Autordomo Jose Carlos Pace producing close racing, memorable championship deciding moments and an atmosphere of pure passion.

Button, who was travelling with his late father John, trainer Mike Collier and manager Richard Goddard, managed to flee the scene unharmed in the incident.
