New Facebook Anti Revenge Porn Tool Wants Users To Upload Their Nudes

Under the system, Facebook would not store the image itself, which the company says protects the photos from possible hackers.

When you send your nude photo to Facebook, what exactly happens to it?

Users who think they might have been the victim of revenge porn are encouraged to actually send themselves the images in question via Messenger.

The victims of revenge porn often give initial consent to sharing their photos with one other person, only to find out later that the images have fallen in the hands of a stranger.

In a statement on the trial, Facebook said: "This is an initial pilot in Australia".

The move follows on from Facebook's update earlier in the year which allowed users to report images that they thought were revenge porn.

On Facebook's part getting a nude photo from a users, analysing it - hashing it is the technical word - will help the website pre-empt the abuse of users. It was even the topic of a Netflix documentary titled, "Revenge Porn". You tell Australian government department that is working with Facebook.

"They're not storing the image, they're storing the link and using artificial intelligence and other photo-matching technologies", Australian E-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant told the Australian Broadcasting Co. Facebook claims it won't store images or videos and will only be tracking a digital footprint, known as a hash, to prevent the content from being uploaded again by someone else.

Facebook will create a digital fingerprint of a nude picture you flag up to it through Messenger, and automatically block anyone from uploading the same image to the site at a later date.

So if a relationship goes sour, you could take proactive steps to prevent any intimate images in possession of your former love interest from being shared widely on Facebook or Instagram.

This builds on existing tools Facebook has to deal with revenge porn. There was technology that could find exact matches of images, but abusers could get around this by slightly altering the files - either by changing their size or adding a small mark.

More fundamentally, though, asking women who have been victims to upload naked photos of themselves is a rather tone-deaf approach, one that's not particularly trauma-informed. In most cases Facebook disables the account that shared the image.
