Koenigsegg Agera RS becomes the world's fastest production vehicle

In early October, Koenigsegg shattered the 0-400-0 km/h world record set by the Bugatti Chiron just weeks earlier, with a 1,360-hp (1,014-kW) Agera RS destined for a customer in the US.

The video shows both runs: one with a top speed of about 438km/h, the other way up there at 457km/h.

This very same vehicle was stretched to its Earth-scorching limits by factory test driver Niklas Lilja on Saturday, along an 11-mile (17.7 km) piece of public highway near Las Vegas on Saturday that had been shut down by Nevada authorities for the attempt.

Swedish high-performance auto manufacturer Koenigsegg has broken the top speed record for a production vehicle.

On a closed stretch of the Nevada highway the Agera RS hit 285mph, wth an average speed of 277.9mph after the two-way average was taken.

The previous record was the 267.8 miles per hour set by the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport in 2010.

That accolade came thanks to the Swedish missile hitting 447 km/h (make that 277.9 mph), a feat that took place in Pahrump, NV.

All that remains is for the world speed record, which was recorded and verified by Racelogic, to be officially recognised. Its 5-liter twin-turbo V8 provides it with 1,160 horsepower. Lau also said that, since the event wasn't a tightly embargoed automaker event, some misinformation was leaking throughout the day - like a reported top speed of 291 miles per hour. With Lilja behind the wheel, the Agera RS managed to go from 0 to 401.78 kph (249.65 mph) and back to 0 in just 33.87 seconds. The tires that were used are Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, and Michelin reps were on hand to be sure everything was good with the tires.
