Mobile And Sprint's Merger Plans Are Dead

A USA market with T-Sprint would be (for better or worse) a significantly changed market. Details of the offer are unknown, but it's said that Sprint's board spent Thursday discussing this whole merger situation.

The companies' unusual step of making a joint announcement on the canceled negotiations could indicate they still recognize the merits of a merger, keeping the door open for potential future talks.

Both companies jointly said they couldn't strike mutually agreeable terms.

"The prospect of combining with Sprint has been compelling for a variety of reasons, including the potential to create significant benefits for consumers and value for shareholders", said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile US, in a prepared statement.

Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure was also of the same opinion and saw the benefits of a combined operation with T-Mobile even if no deal has been ultimately reached. If the companies had struck a deal this year, they would have had a better chance of getting government approval under the Trump administration. Sprint has been struggling to stem the loss of subscribers.

T-Mobile is a better position as a standalone company, analysts have said.

With growth opportunity in the United States remaining extremely slim for wireless carriers due to large-sized players and the highly mature nature of the market, Sprint will have to find a way to start growing its subscription count.

Both companies had expressed interest in a tie-up this year. Sprint's parent SoftBank almost acquired T-Mobile in 2014 but the deal fell through after USA regulators expressed concerns.

But no deal was announced immediately following the conclusion of a ban on merger talks in the spring that was associated with a US government auction of wireless airwaves.

An added wrinkle was Sprint's negotiations with cable companies Comcast Corp and Charter Communications Inc.

Sprint and its owner, the Japanese conglomerate SoftBank, have always been looking for a deal as the company has struggled to compete on its own. However, it is possible the deal will fail to go through regardless. It seemed this most recent deal was doomed to failure, as well.
