Nadal prepares to quietly seal number one status

This has been a remarkable season for Nadal, who bounced back from wrist problems past year to win his 15th and 16th grand slam titles at the French Open and US Open.

Nadal fought off competition to be crowned ATP year-end No.1 from Roger Federer- the two legendary tennis players have gone head-to-head this year after both enjoying impressive comebacks.

Nadal was not at his best against the 21-year-old Chung, but was rarely tested.

It has been a stunning year for the 31-year-old, who won the French Open for the tenth time, as well as winning the US Open and reaching the final of the Australian Open. Nadal also won one more title on the year, at the 500-level tournament in Beijing last month.

"And missing this tournament Bercy that I love, which is played in a city that I love too, costs me a lot".

'I'm happy to achieve the year-end world No. 1 here in Paris'.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that it is his fourth time of finishing atop the rankings, adding to 2008, 2010 and 2013. "After nearly 10 years since the first time that I finished the year with this number".

Nadal will next face Pablo Cuevas in the last 16 on Thursday, after the unseeded Uruguayan edged out Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/1), 6-2.

But Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga failed in his his efforts to reach the season-ending eight-man event with a surprise 2-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 defeat by compatriot and world number 83 Julien Benneteau.

The 20-year-old German lost his composure after easing through the first set, as his bid for a third Masters title of the season was abruptly ended.

Fifth-seeded Dominic Thiem needed four match points to beat lucky loser Peter Gojowczyk of Germany 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-4 in the second round of the Paris Masters on Tuesday.

The Spaniard, who has risen from ninth at the start of the year via French and US Open victories, advanced 7-5 6-3 in one hour and 48 minutes.

Home hope Lucas Pouille kept his slim hopes of qualifying for the World Tour Finals alive by seeing off Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4.
