Republicans launch two new probes targeting Clinton, Obama

Two Republicans who head influential House committees said on Tuesday they will open a joint investigation into the FBI's handling of the 2016 probe into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server.

Nunes is an avid defender of Trump and was stripped of his lead role in the House Intelligence Committee's Russian interference investigation earlier this year for politicizing it.

The Iowa Republican sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions last Wednesday asking whether the Department of Justice was investigating the fact that former President Bill Clinton was paid for a speech around the time that the U.S. government approved the Uranium One deal, and that Russians donated millions to the Clinton Foundation years before the uranium deal. "Our job is to get the facts. and we're going to do just that". Nunes, now the subject of an ethics inquiry for his actions, subsequently handed over the reins of the committee's investigation of Russian election meddling to Rep. K. Michael Conaway (R-Tex.), but he has not recused himself from the inquiry.

The Republican chairman of the House intelligence committee, Rep. Devin Nunes, also announced a separate investigation into a uranium deal brokered during President Barack Obama's tenure.

Russian Federation gradually acquired control of a Canadian mining company-Uranium One-with mining stakes in the United States from 2009 to 2013, a series of agreements that gave it control of 20 percent of America's uranium production capacity.

The Washington Post's fact checker reported a year ago that although the State Department was one of several agencies that would have been able to approve the 2010 deal, "there is no evidence Clinton herself got involved in the deal personally, and it is highly questionable that this deal even rose to the level of the secretary of state". Nine government agencies and a number of federal and state regulators approved the uranium deal. "That amounts to ten months of abdication of responsibility-a near total failure to question, investigate, or challenge the President or the White House, including on grave allegations of obstruction of justice".

Allegations surrounding the uranium deal resurfaced this past week when The Hill reported the FBI was investigating the donations and did not inform Congress.

The Uranium One deal involved selling part of a Canadian-based mining company to the Russian nuclear corporation Rosatom, giving the company control of more than 20 percent of America's uranium supply.

Nunes announced his new probe days after Fusion GPS - the firm behind the explosive Steele dossier - accused him of going back on his April decision to step away from the Russian Federation investigation.
