Breast Cancer Study Helps Researchers Better Understand the Disease

Breast cancer is the most frequently-diagnosed cancer globally and is the leading cause of cancer-related death in women.

Doctors think they've found a link between breast cancer and the bacteria in our bodies.

"Many women are offered mammogram screenings when they are middle-aged, but if we know a woman has genetic markers that place her at higher risk of breast cancer, we can recommend more intensive screening at a younger age".

There is sufficient scientific evidence to prove first-degree relatives of a hormone receptor-positive breast cancer patient have double the risk of getting breast cancer themselves compared to women without a family history of the cancer. It should also help to identify more effectively the women with a high risk of suffering from such a cancer, but also to reduce the screening to be unnecessary and over-diagnosis.

Your weight, activity level, alcohol consumption and breast density may determine your risk of breast cancer.

Dr Pallave Dasari, an Australian breast cancer research fellow at University of Adelaide, said that while she believed this was a "really valuable" progression in understanding family history risk, a test was "extremely premature" at this stage. The researchers found that non-cancerous breast tissue had more of a certain type of bacteria, and the cancerous tissue had other types that were elevated.

World Health Organization suggests preventive strategies to stave off risks of breast cancer and to facilitate early detection.

"These findings add significantly to our understanding of the inherited basis of breast cancer as well as identifying new genetic variants, we have also confirmed many that we had previously suspected", study investigator Doug Easton of the University of Cambridge said. "There's been a lot of research trying to figure out what that something else is".

This important discovery will help to determine with greater accuracy the risk of a woman developing breast cancer during her lifetime.

The city is now looking at where to donate this year's proceeds, Bradshaw said, and is considering the Sisters Network, among different local breast cancer support organizations.

"However, we do not always find the mutation in the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 among many of these women and their habits of life do not seem to be problematic".

"Some of the variations are protective, others increase the risk".

A further seven genes were identified specifically in association with breast cancers that lacked oestrogen receptors, which don't tend to respond to hormone based therapies.

She hopes the research might lead to less harsh and more effective breast cancer treatments.
