Teen Driver Safety Week: Info Your Teen Driver Needs to Know

Tragically, 22 of those 2017 traffic deaths in the Commonwealth have been teenagers between 15 and 19 years of age.* With this initiative being held during National Teen Driver Safety Week, it's important to highlight the fact that half of all teens will be involved in a vehicle crash before they graduate from high school.

Auto crashes remain the top killer of teenagers in the United States, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

AAA said 75-percent of nighttime crashes involving teen drivers happen between 9 p.m. and midnight.

Distracted driving, drowsy driving, speeding, alcohol use, not wearing a seatbelt, and driving with passengers are among the risky driving behaviors teens are more likely than older drivers to engage in behind the wheel. He says those two create a recipe for a traffic accident.

Did you know that 82 percent of teen drivers say that technologies have helped them improve their driving?

"One out of every five young drivers in the United States is involved in a collision within the first six months of driving, often because they are distracted".

What's not so encouraging, however, is that even though highway fatalities continue to fall nationally, distracted driving remains a potentially deadly problem for both teens and adults. "It will take a holistic approach that combines education, experiential learning, and enforcement to change the driving culture to one that is distraction-free". NHTSA data shows that over 50 percent of teen drivers killed in auto crashes were unbelted in 2016, as were more than 60 percent of teen passengers who perished. These tasks that seem ordinary to a well-seasoned driver but can be threatening to a teen driver who may not have been taught how to handle these situations from driver's education or parents.

Offer teens "road wisdom" you've acquired over the years.

The CHP is aware of the importance of role models in a youth's development. Despite not being legally allowed to buy alcohol, nearly one out of five teen drivers involved in fatal crashes had been drinking, according to 2015 data from the NHTSA. Remind your teen that driving under the influence of any impairing substance, including illicit and prescription drugs, could have deadly consequences and is strictly enforced. Parents and others, setting the example and educating new drivers is regarded as a critical function to help keep everyone safe while driving. Parents and guardians must set firm driving rules to impact their teen's driving behavior. This is a unsafe habit that can lead to drowsy driving.
