People trapped in rubble after Mogadishu blast

A massive bomb attack in a busy area of the Somali capital Mogadishu has killed at least 30 people, police say. Usually, the shebab instead target the hotels in which resident officials and have sworn the loss of the fragile central government in somalia, supported by the worldwide community and by the 22,000-strong african Union (Amisom).

A huge explosion has reportedly hit one of the busiest street in Somalia's capital of Mogadishu, number of casualties is unknown. Windows of nearby buildings were shattered.

The explosion occurred in front of the Safari Hotel, a popular establishment but that is usually not frequented by government officials.

The attack occurred two days after the head of the US Africa Command was in Mogadishu to meet with Somalia's president.

The recent attacks have taken place in the capital and nearby areas.

"It was a vehicle bomb".

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but authorities have ideas on who it could be since they have carried out other attacks in the past. Two civilians were killed, " Siyad Farah, a police major, told Reuters, adding that a suspect had been caught on suspicion of planting explosives.

The Al Qaeda-allied group has been trying to topple the UN-backed government and its African Union allies. The prime minister's office announced the resignation of Abdullahi and army chief Ahmed Mohamed Jimale Irfid on Thursday. The US forces have stepped up drone strikes and other efforts this year against al-Shabab.
