U.S. to stand with Puerto Rico until "job is done" -White House

The president's tweets set off a flurry of chatter online, given that the USA territory is barely entering its third week with the majority of the population still without power and one-third without water. It knocked out electricity to the whole island and caused widespread damage to homes and infrastructure.

He says at a White House briefing the US will stand with Puerto Rico "until the job is done". He says the US will "stand with those American citizens in Puerto Rico until the job is done".

"We have gone all out for Puerto Rico", Trump said at that meeting with Puerto Rico officials, including Cruz.

"We can not keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been unbelievable (under the most hard circumstances) in P.R. forever!", Trump tweeted, in one of a series of morning posts expressing frustration with the situation in the U.S. territory of 3.4 million people.

"Mr. President, you seem to want to disregard the moral imperative that your administration has been unable to fulfill", the mayor said in a statement.

Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pennsylvania, who is a member of the House foreign affairs committee, told CNN's Chris Cuomo Thursday there's only "so much" the USA can do to help Puerto Rico.

About 19,000 civilian and military service personnel are working in recovery efforts in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, FEMA has said, according to NPR and NBC News.

"It is shameful that President Trump is threatening to abandon these Americans when they most need the federal government's help", said Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer, the second-ranking House Democrat.

Trump has been complaining about Puerto Rico's debt and infrastructure issues since the hurricanes made landfall and has claimed the mayor of San Juan has poor leadership skills.

Maria slammed into Puerto Rico as the island was already struggling with a severe financial crisis, which forced the government to file for bankruptcy in May.

Captain Scott Miller, a spokesman for the United States military's Northern Command, which is overseeing Puerto Rico relief operations, said there had been no instructions to dial back aid.

Ryan, the House speaker, planned to visit Puerto Rico on Friday. The measure sticks close to the White House request, ignoring - for now - huge demands from the powerful Florida and Texas delegations, who together pressed for some $40 billion more. "It's not easy when you are continue to suffer - see the suffering of the people without food, without water, and actually living in a humanitarian crisis".
