Trump To Make Downgraded Visit To Britain In Early 2018

Mr Trump's visit will now take place without the glitz and pomp of a full state visit, the Evening Standard reported.

A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Theresa May said Trump had accepted an invite for a state visit, but that her office was not aware of any discussions relating to a separate working visit.

He is due to make a "working visit" which wouldn't feature the pageantry, or a stay with the Queen, that a state visit would include.

MPs from across the political aisle criticised the invitation at the time and John Bercow, the Commons Speaker, announced he would oppose an address to Parliament.

Trump has already visited a number of other nations as president, including Paris where he endured an awkward handshake with Emmanuel Macron and the Vatican, where he met Pope Francis.

Prime Minister Theresa May had offered a state visit to the first-term President which had been greeted with threats of boycott and mass protests by the Opposition.

Thousands of people launched protests against the move, while more than a million people signed a petition to stop the trip from going ahead.

The president's United Kingdom visit has been a source of controversy in the past.

The Trump administration immediately dismissed the report, adding that the trip, expected next year, is still in the planning stages.

In July there was speculation that Trump would visit his Scottish golf course and then Downing Street after the G20 summit in Hamburg, as part of a European trip that included a big speech in Warsaw.

"Exact dates for President Trump to visit have not yet been arranged".

The visit may be timed to coincide with the opening of the new USA embassy near Battersea Power station, sources said.

Jeremy Shapiro claimed Trump was "exploiting" Britain's romantic view of the special relationship to get a post-Brexit trading deal that benefited America.
