Mass Evacuations as CA Wildfires Spread

Tens of thousands of acres have burned in multiple wildfires in Napa County Monday morning, Cal Fire officials said.

San Francisco Chronicle reporter Kurtis Alexander shared footage on Twitter on Monday of both a Hilton hotel and a Kmart on fire in Santa Rosa.

Similar wildfires rages across the area in August 2015, when 12,000 residents were evacuated and 60,000 acres went up in flames, after drought conditions and winds left firefighters struggling to contain the outbreaks.

As of 6:35 p.m. on October 8, the Freeway Fire in Tehama County was 100 percent contained.

Evacuations were ordered along Porter Creek, Petrified Forest, Franz Valley and Mountain Home Ranch roads.

Firefighters were also battling a 50-acre grass fire on Highway 37 between Lakeville Highway and Highway 121. The Atlas Peak fire near the city of Napa had burned more than 10,000 acres by 6 am.

Officials said Sonoma County emergency dispatchers were being "overwhelmed by 911 calls" from residents smelling smoke, adding, "Please only call 911 if you see actual unattended flames".

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has issued a smoke advisory for Monday.

"There are fires burning in a handful of areas, but Napa is the primary focus because it started there first", Jourdan said. Shelters have been set up in the affected counties.

Multiple fires broke out Sunday night as strong winds buffeted the area.

Fires are also burning in Butte and Nevada counties. Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital was also safely evacuated.

Forecasters said winds were expected to ease by middday Monday.

"By the time I got things loaded into the vehicle to evacuate with, the hill behind my house looked like it was just ablaze", Nancy Christiansen said. Guests were evacuated. "At this point we are unable to conduct business in any capacity", Hayman stated. "We are not on scene yet and haven't been able to determine the best evacuation route".

In Santa Rosa, the fire burned through the Sky Farm subdivision above Santa Rosa's Fountaingrove neighborhood and raced down the hill toward the Larkfield-Wikiup area.

"I'm probably not going to", she says.

Flames were also burning near the Domaine Carneros winery.

The Cal Fire service confirmed the Tubbs fire of Napa Valley has burned 20,000 acres of land in total, while the Nuns fire of Sonoma has destroyed 300 acres.
