F1: Max Verstappen ends birthday on a high with Malaysian GP win

Horner believes Verstappen's ability to handle pressure was the most impressive part of his Malaysian Grand Prix victory.

Vettel (Ferrari) did well to slice his way through the field and finish fourth (+37.362s) to keep his title hopes alive.

"The whole race went well".

"I think in the beginning, straight away the vehicle felt good and I saw Lewis struggling a bit with traction and he was clipping a bit more than me, so I used my battery as much as I could and of course he has more to lose than me in the championship so I went for it in Turn 1 and from there I could my own race". "Really happy we managed to do a good qualifying again, the vehicle [was performing well] except maybe the final run in Q3".

Hamilton had started on pole for Mercedes but was passed by Verstappen early on and had no answer to the pace of the Dutchman throughout, with the second Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo taking the final step on the podium.

"After a weekend where we have lacked a significant chunk of performance, we couldn't have imagined such a good outcome, but we can't let that distract us from the job we have in front of us", said Wolff. Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen did not even start, despite qualifying second.

Hamilton increased his championship lead to 34 points by finishing second, but Ferrari will be happy with Vettel's sensational comeback nonetheless. Verstappen has retired from seven of the past 12 races - mostly through mechanical gremlins - to find himself a whopping 96 points adrift of Ricciardo in the championship standings. I have no idea where it will be an issue and where it will be fine. The day after turning 20, Verstappen turned on the style, making a fine move to overtake Hamilton on lap 4.

"There are things we need to understand but this year we have a good record for reliability, I'm not too anxious to be honest, we just have to get on top of these problems we have". It was the best I could really do.

"Here we were really quick so now we should be quick on every track but you are never 100 percent sure".

The second Ferrari of Raikkonen had qualified second but the Finn did not make the start due to a battery issue - although Vettel is unconcerned by the reliability.

"We were pushing very hard to get to him (Ricciardo) and thought we would give it a go but we knew with tyres it would be critical so we ran out of tyres a bit at the end", Vettel said.
