Mattis likely to push India on troops - Today's Paper

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday met her U.S. counterpart James Mattis and discussed the issue of terror safe havens in Pakistan and both nations agreed that such sanctuaries can not be tolerated.

We also discussed the issues relating to maritime security in the Indian Ocean and the broader Asia-Pacific Region as well as regional connectivity issues. Mattis said the two countries recognized the threat to global peace from terror and both agreed that there should be "no tolerance to safe havens for terrorists".

India on Tuesday ruled out deploying troops in Afghanistan but reiterated its participation in the war-torn country's development activities.

"We are also at the moment training their officials in good governance..."

Fighter jets, drone deals and shared concerns over Afghanistan's security look set to dominate the agenda when US Defense Secretary James Mattis visits India this week.

India has already extended $3-billion aid to Afghanistan and has a progressing bilateral trade with it. India could also be seen as an intermediary between Iran and Russian Federation - with whom USA has hostile relations - over influencing developments in Afghanistan.

Sitharaman said Washington's cooperation in defence equipment has grown steadily over the past few years and that the USA is now a leading supplier to India.

"For its part Pakistan often gives safe havens to agents of chaos, violence and terror", Trump said.

Both countries jointly condemn terrorism.

The U.S. sees India as a counterweight to the rising influence of China, and hopes to persuade New Delhi to become more involved in bringing stability to Afghanistan. This is especially important because it has been seen in the past that whenever a United States minister visited Pakistan or India, they used to visit the second country.

Mattis said the USA looked forward to sharing "some of our most advanced defence technologies through the Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI)".

India and United States will stress on freedom of navigation through the disputed South China Sea.

"The very same forces which find safe haven in Pakistan are the same that hit at NY and Mumbai", she said.

President Donald Trump last month announced the new strategy and called for contribution of India in the reconstruction of Afghanistan.

"The situation in our neighbourhood and growing menace of cross-border terrorism were discussed in-depth", Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said after the meeting.
