Long surviving Kashmiri terrorist killed at LoC

He was a resident of Baramulla district and was one of the longest surviving Kashmiri militant commanders carrying a bounty of Rs 10 lakh rupees on his head.

Imtiyaz Hussain, Baramulla Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), said, "Najar was killed by security forces foiling an infiltration bid in Lachipora area near the LoC on Tuesday morning". Until 2015, Qayoom, 42, until 2015 was affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen but he broke away from the outfit after he was expelled by Hizbul chief Syed Salahuddin. He was killed while he was returning from Pakistan.

At that time hitherto, unknown Lashkar- e-Islam posters surfaced in the town considered as the support base of Geelani.

Earlier, Police had announced a reward of Rs 10 lakhs for information leading to the arrest of Najar. Najar came to the limelight after the attacks on mobile towers and killings of six civilians in Sopore and its adjacent villages. According to an intelligence officer, Qayoom changed his appearance by using wigs and impersonation to deceive the security agencies.

Dreaded Grade A A terrorists Abdul Qayoom Najar was shot dead at Uri by the security agencies.

Najar, 39, had been an active part of terrorist operations since 1999. "As they were challenged, militants opened fire triggering a gunfight".

"Prior to being killed, Najar was arrested in 1992 and later released but instead of remaining in the mainstream, he again took up arms in 1995", said the police official.

The officials say that Najar didn't like intervention from Hurriyat leaders in militancy as he felt his writ was being challenged by the separatist leadership.
