U.S. enforces travel restrictions for North Korea, Venezuela

Meanwhile, Trump kept the controversial travel ban which was set to expire Sunday on five of six countries, namely, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen, and lifted restrictions on Sudan.

The new order drops Sudan from the list and adds three new countries: Chad, North Korea and Venezuela.

The department of homeland security will have the authority to add or remove travel restrictions on countries as conditions change, a senior administration official said.

Officials described the process of reaching the new recommendations as far more deliberate and systematic than Trump's original travel ban order, which was signed just days after he took office with little consultation or input outside the White House.

North Korea, Venezuela and Chad were added Sunday on a new list of countries targeted by a U.S. travel ban due to poor security and lack of cooperation with American authorities.

Tweeting the updated list, Donald Trump wrote: "Making America Safe is my number one priority".

"The Trump administration will ensure we only admit those who can be properly vetted and will not pose a threat to national security or public safety", a White House official said when asked about the Journal's story on Friday. The latter two are the first nations included in a version of the travel ban that do not have majority-Muslim populations, which has been a key point in litigation challenging the ban as discriminatory based on religion. In some cases, these countries also have a significant terrorist presence.

Days ago, the USA president called for a "tougher" travel ban after a bomb partially exploded on a London subway.

The restrictions, which will start on 18 October, are targeted at countries that Department of Homeland Security officials say refuse to share information with the U.S. or have not taken necessary security precautions.

Almost 200 countries were evaluated, with Trump saying that the countries subject to the ban remain deficient with respect to their identity-management and information-sharing capabilities.

The United States then shared those benchmarks with every country in the world and gave them 50 days to comply.

Officials haven't said which countries or how many the new measures might affect. After that date, the new restrictions on travel will begin.

Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen and Somalia were left on the list of affected countries in a new proclamation issued by the president.

Trump has also blocked the issuance of all visas from North Korea and Syria, while for Iran, almost all visas were blocked except those for students and exchange visitors. Such additional scrutiny will also be required for Somali citizens applying for all non-immigrant visas.

Mr. Trump last week called for a "tougher" travel ban after a bomb partially exploded on a London subway.
