Adidas passes Jordan brand as 2nd-most popular sneaker; Nike on top

And, according to the NPD Group which tracks sneaker sales, Adidas sales jumped by more than 50 percent in August 2017 relative to the same month past year, boosting their overall market 13 percent, due to their tireless efforts. "I thought it wouldn't happen until next year", said NPD Sports Industry analyst Matt Powell.

Adidas can thank the wild popularity of its Ultraboost line and Yeezys for that.

The NPD Group tracks consumer sales and says Adidas sneaker sales jumped by the more than 50 percent in August 2017 compared with the same month past year.

"Adidas sport footwear sales grew more than half for the month and share grew by almost half, to 13%", Powell reported. That growth had to come at the expense of some competition but Jordan brand isn't a big victim.

"They are really customer-centric", Powell added of Adidas. The swoosh was the worst performing Dow stock in 2016 and has gained just five percent year to date in 2017 as the market continues to make record highs.

"Nike let the Jordan business get overheated, which slowed down the liquidations". Over the a year ago, shares of Adidas are up 31.3 percent while shares of Nike are down three percent.

Another note worth mentioning, older sneakerheads will remember when adidas was King, and Nike was the brand on the come up-before this rookie named Michael Jordan came in and changed the game. Now that Jordan is rolling out wider releases for its once coveted retro products, which used to sell out immediately.

The latest back-to-school data is echoing the sentiment that has been well covered in the sportswear world over the past year; adidas AG (ADR) (OTC: ADDYY) is up and Nike Inc (NYSE: NKE) is down.
