Terror related arrests reach record high

54 of the suspects were women, the figures revealed - a record 14 per cent.

The number of people detained in Britain on suspicion of terrorism offences in the 12 months ending 30 June 2017 is up by 68% on the previous year, the Home Office says.

The figures show the number of arrests up to June this year, including the 12 arrests made in connection with Westminster, the 23 after Manchester and the 21 arrests after London Bridge.

The United Kingdom made a record number of terrorism-related arrests over the past year, newly-released government data show.

Of all the arrests that were made, just under a third resulted in a charge and half were released.

It also includes the one arrest made after the vehicle attack near Finsbury Park Mosque.

The figures have soared by 68 per cent since a year ago, reaching the highest level since records began.

"It has been an exceptional year in terms of the way in which the police operations and intelligence services have been gathering intelligence and trying to bring people to justice after three terrorist attacks in quick succession".

By ethnicity, the number who were white more than doubled from 66 to 122 and the number of Asians rose by 116 to 168.

"That's why we're looking at such a high number, but they are still pretty significant".

Most of the arrests were linked to worldwide terrorism but 52 were for domestic terrorism.

Domestic terrorism refers to activity where there are no links to either Northern Ireland-related or global terrorism. Meanwhile, 189 were released without charge.

The police and MI5 are typically running about 500 investigations involving 3,000 individuals at any time, and at least 20,000 former "subjects of interest" are also kept under review, according to the Sky News website.

Nineteen terrorist plots have been thwarted in the last four years, including six since the Westminster attack in March.
