Turkey tells citizens to take care in Germany

This week, the ministry intensified its travel guidelines for Turkey.

On Turkey's political row with Germany, Celik said Berlin's apparent wish to suspend Turkey's European Union relations would not affect its candidacy to the bloc.

"Turkish citizens who live in, or who plan to travel to, Germany should be cautious and act prudently in cases of possible incidents, behaviour or verbal assaults of xenophobia and racism", the foreign ministry said. Ankara says Germany is deliberately supporting Turkish dissent, especially those who have played a role in the July 15, 2016 coup.

Previously, Turkey blocked a group of German lawmakers from visiting the servicemen at the Incirlik Air Base, prompting German Chancellor Angela Merkel to suggest, that Berlin may consider moving 250 troops, stationed at the Air Base, to one of the neighboring countries.

"The relationship between Turkey and Germany must not develop in the manner that the government in Ankara is obviously and systematically pushing forward", Schulz said on the sidelines of a campaign event in the city of Mainz.

Merkel's strong words prompted a swift rebuke from Ankara, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman on Monday accusing German politicians of pandering to populism. "It is worrying that a chancellor-candidate political leader in Germany has recently made statements including clear racist elements and German officials took no measures for it", it said.

"Turkey's travel travel warning against Germany is a bad joke!"

The ministry also added that Berlin was "embracing terror organizations", namely the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ), widely believed to have masterminded last year's failed coup.

Terrorists "walk freely on the streets" of Germany, the ministry charged. It warned that Turkish citizens were being ill-treated at German airports and that racist arsonists had lit fires in Turkish-populated areas.

Mr Shulz has said he would seek to end Turkey's membership talks with the EU.

Relations between the two countries plummeted after a series of diplomatic crises.

But a number of European Union ministers urged a more measured response than Merkel suggested, warning against rushing into hasty action against Turkey, which is an important member of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and a key partner for Europe in tackling the migrant crisis.

Some 50,000 people have been jailed and 150,000 have lost their jobs, while private companies have been seized.
