Irma a concern for local official with family ties in Puerto Rico

Delta flight status data show Flight 431 left JFK at 8:12 a.m. and arrived in San Juan at 12:01pm; Delta 302 left San Juan at 12:41pm and arrived in NY at 4:22pm.

Fort Worth-based American Airlines was scrambling this week trying to get flights out of several Caribbean destinations ahead of Hurricane Irma.

"As Irma got closer, we were getting anxious", she said.

Sarah Lora, a Delta spokeswoman, told HuffPost that it is against company policy to give out information on the flight's pilots and crew, but she did confirm that Flight 431 flew from NY to San Juan "on a safe route, touched down, picked up the people that needed to be picked up and made it back to John F. Kennedy".

The feat of aviation was first noticed by Jason Rabinowitz, a self-proclaimed "av geek" who researches and writes about airlines, airplanes, transit, and travel.

Travelers have been working hard to get out of Puerto Rico, while numerous United States island territory's residents have been trying to get home before the massive storm hits.

People in Puerto Rico know well the impact a Category 5 hurricane can have.

"This Delta flight was the last both in and out of SJU", Rabinowitz said on Twitter.

Architect and designer Rebecca said that "nobody is in the streets" and people have taken extra measures to board up any glass in their homes and businesses. There was only light rain at the time of landing.

Vice-president for Delta operations and customer centre, Erik Snell, told The Washington Post that the successful mission was thanks to a joint effort by flight and ground crew, dispatchers and their meteorology team.

Winds were 28 to 36 miles per hour when the flight landed, which is well below the safety limits for the aircraft.

They even managed to take off using a gap between Irma's core and the storm's outer bands, an impressive feat of flight planning and execution.

He got to San Juan on Sunday for a vacation and tried to fly back early to avoid the storm, but everything was sold out.

While it looked terrifying, Delta maintains their pilots had everything under control.
