Board Grants Parole to Manson Follower

Van Houten, who was 19 when she killed for Manson in 1969, appeared before a parole panel for the 21st time Wednesday. The state will now conduct a 120-day review of the parole panel's decision, after which Brown will have 30 days to "uphold, reverse or modify the decision".

A similar panel at the California Institution for Women in Chino, where Van Houten is incarcerated, granted her parole a year ago but was overruled by the governor.

Former Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten has been approved for parole.

"Van Houten was part of a group that stormed into the LaBiancas' home in Los Feliz".

She admitted to killing Los Angeles grocer Leno La Bianca and his wife, Rosemary, in their home in August 1969. "They were all better people than this one, and they don't get a parole or release or get to be with their friends and family again", she said.

Leslie Van Houten, shown in 2002, has repeatedly been denied parole.

On the night of the attack almost five decades ago, she said she held Rosemary LaBianca down with a pillowcase over her head as others stabbed her dozens of times. Now ill in hospital aged 82, we take a look back on his life behind bars: did he have it easy?

Van Houten was both the youngest and also seemingly the most unlikely member of Manson's so-called family.

Rich Pfeiffer, an attorney for Van Houten, told The Associated Press that his client was relieved by Wednesday's ruling, adding he believes she will be released eventually.

"I don't let myself off the hook". But release has been strongly opposed by the families of the victims as well as prosecutors and many others.

A member of cult leader Charles Manson's infamous "family" has been granted parole - and Sharon Tate's sister is already working to overturn it.

Fellow family members Tex Watson and Patricia Krenwinkel have each been denied parole multiple times, while Susan Atkins died in prison in 2009.

Share ended her testimony by saying that she regretted encouraging Houten to join the cult.
