Japan and United Kingdom pledge to co-operate over North Korea threat

North Korea has been working to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the United States and has recently threatened to land missiles near the US Pacific territory of Guam. "This dramatically undercuts the State Department - any offer of talks to North Korea has zero credibility if the president is not on board".

The North's official KCNA news agency decried the former colonial power in a commentary, saying: "Japan has now come out with its sleeves rolled up in supporting its master's anti-DPRK war moves".

Kim Jong-un has been shamelessly threatening his nearest neighbour and their allies USA with repeated tests - including this week firing a missile over Japan.

On Wednesday, he tweeted "Talking is not the answer!" and said "all options are on the table".

Tuesday: The U.S. tests missile defense in HawaiiThis US Navy handout photo released on August 30, 2017 shows a medium-range ballistic missile target as it is launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kauai, Hawaii, during Flight Test Standard Missile-27, Event 2 on August 29, 2017. After last month's two ICBM tests, some analysts believe North Korea has the ability to strike major US cities, as well as a number of other population centers around the world.

Tensions between the U.S. and North Korea have been heightened since Pyongyang's latest missile launch over Japan's airspace on Monday.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and British Prime Minister Theresa May provided a united voice yesterday when they warned that North Korea's missile tests now mean that the rogue state "has become a global threat".

While it is hard to predict the long-terms consequences of the launch, in the short term, it was able to drive a certain wedge between the above countries regarding their further reaction to the launch, the expert concluded.

Which missile did it fire on Tuesday? Under the 1994 U.S.

March: Two ballistic missiles tested over the Pacific Ocean, the first such tests since 2009, violating a United Nations resolution.

February: North Korea admits it has produced nuclear weapons that it says are for self defense and says it is not interested in disarmament talks.

Kim Jong Un said his nation has drawn a lesson "again that it should show action, not talk, to the USA imprudently denying the (North's) initiative measure for easing the extreme tension" and stressed that it will continue to watch America's demeanor toward the North and decide its future actions accordingly.

South Korea's Army and Air Force conducted a combined live-fire exercise early Monday morning South Korean time in response to North Korea's sixth nuclear test, according to a statement form the country's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The Spanish government has summoned North Korean Ambassador Kim Hyok Chol to inform him of its decision to reduce from three to two the number of diplomatic personnel allowed to represent Pyongyang in Madrid.

North Korea's latest nuclear test is likely to pile more pressure on China to take tough action against its neighbor, but Beijing already doubts economic sanctions will work and says it is not its sole responsibility to rein in Pyongyang. Earlier this week, South Korea said it will boost its military budget next year by 6.9% to $38.4 billion, the biggest hike in eight years.

In 1945, the Japanese occupation of Korea ends with the Japanese defeat in World War II.
