Burning Man Festival: man dies after running into fire

A 41-year-old man who broke through a safety perimeter at Burning Man Saturday night and ran into the flames of the burning man has died from his injuries, as the Associated Press reports. He later died at the UC Davis hospital burn center in California, the sheriff says.

More than 70,000 people attend the Burning Man festival every year.

Mitchell was a USA citizen from Oklahoma but was now living in Switzerland. "Firefighters leaped to the rescue and treated him on the scene".

Perhaps ironically, the bonfire at the Burning Man festival reflecting the culmination of nine days of revelry, free love, expression and artistic and pagan like ritual was Mitchell's own personal sacrifice to the gods of ritual. Despite the self-parodying aspects of the festival, the metaphor of Burning Man has rarely achieved such existential heights.

The incident happened about 10:30 p.m. Organizers did not say which fire the man ran into.

The festival culminates with the burning of a towering 40-foot effigy made of wood, a symbol of rebirth, which usually happens the Saturday before the Labor Day holiday.

Burning Man spokesman Jim Graham said the event is proceeding apace.

If there ever was a time to come together with your neighbors in celebration of freedom, self-expression and art, it would be during the Burning Man festival.

The Man burns on the Black Rock Desert at Burning Man near Gerlach, Nevada.

Following the death, authorities established that the 30-year-old had meant to take his own life and had told other festival-goers of his plans.
