The first Android 8.0 Oreo phone is here, the Sony Xperia XZ1

Not a bad looking pair, but not very exciting either. Being Cat 15, the XZ1 Compact hits download speeds of up to 800Mbps.

Harnessing the latest Sony innovation and audio technologies to offer immersive entertainment all wrapped up in a timeless premium design, Xperia XZ1 incorporates the latest Motion Eye camera for capturing detail beyond human eye capability, new ground-breaking technology for mobile with 3D scanning, class-leading display technologies for handsome on-screen images including HDR display, and a premium listening experience with Hi-Res Audio.

Apart from this, the rear camera captures 720p super slow motion videos at 960fps alongside 4K videos.

Sony's new flagship Android phone doubles-down on what you'd expect the company to: photography and multimedia. XZ1 runs on a 2700mAh battery which sounds small.

Unfortunately, the XZ1 Compact isn't listed for release by Sony Mobile South Africa.

Still, if you've been holding out for a compact flagship this could be the phone to buy. However, the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact is marginally slimmer and heavier at 9.3mm thick and 143g to the Xperia X Compact's 9.5mm and 135g. It features a Snapdragon 835 chipset with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. That's disappoining, given that waterproofing is something we're seeing more and more on smartphones - including many of Sony's own handsets. The fingerprint sensor is on the side of the device, as always. But in the U.S., we get nothing. Sony does note however that this feature may not be available in all markets, a likely indication that the phones sold in the United States of America will once again skip on the fingerprint sensor. Sadly you don't get either wireless charging or, a lingering omission on Sony's part in the U.S., a fingerprint scanner for biometric security. Nonetheless, you will see that the material is the same frosted matte glass instead of the premium aluminum. And while I'm not going to say that either XZ1 is ugly, their sizable top and bottom bezels are already out of style. That timing, notably, makes it one of the first handsets to ship with Android Oreo out of the box.

That won't be a huge problem for most as it will be a small sacrifice to pay to get a smaller phone with high-end specs. That is iPhone territory in terms of cost, but not carrier support. Eventually, Sony plans to allow you to send that to a 3D printing company and get back a physical print, or even import it into a game so that your face could be a playable character.

Since this is a follow-up to the X Compact, we're hoping the price will remain similar.

One of these is the arrival of Sony's Motion Eye camera tech, built using know-how from Sony's Cyber-shot cameras, to give life-like images that Sony claims are like no other taken by a smartphone.

That could all be changing now though, as Sony has just announced the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact, alongside the Sony Xperia XZ1.
