India, China soldiers involved in border altercation: Indian sources

The report on possible trade war between the two countries comes amid the ongoing standoff between Indian and Chinese soldiers at Doklam in the Sikkim sector. Wang Yang was the chief guest at the 70th Independence Day celebration in Pakistan from where he flew down to Nepal for his official visit.

The Indian military declined to comment on the incident.

The minister, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government had no choice but to act to stop the Chinese road activity in the region because it had come too close for comfort.

According to officials, soldiers from both the side have suffered minor injuries due to the stone pelting. An article in the Global Times today criticised India's decision to impose anti-dumping duties on Chinese products, warning India should be prepared for the "possible consequences for its ill-considered action".

In Beijing, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Chinese troops sought to avoid confrontations and said India should "make tangible efforts to maintain the peace and stability of the border areas between the two countries".

The editorial also blamed India for not allowing Bhutan to establish diplomatic relations with five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, a relationship that no large country has with a small country till this day.

However, reports said that there were no ceremonial meeting held between the officers of the Indian Army and China's People's Liberation Army as per the tradition.

China has repeatedly asked India to unilaterally withdraw from the Doklam area, or else face the prospect of an escalation. The border trouble began in June when Chinese soldiers started to extend a road through the Doklam territory - known as "Donglang" in Chinese.
