Gates Makes Massive Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) Donation

Gates now owns 1.3 per cent of the company's outstanding shares, down from 2.3 per cent before he made the $4.6 billion gift. The second largest was made by Mr. (Warren) Buffett, who donated nearly $3.2bn to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation last month.

Despite the donation, which stems from a reduction in his stake in Microsoft by 64 million shares, Gates remains the world's richest person.

Gates and his wife set up the charity with an initial $5bn funding pot to improve global healthcare and reduce extreme poverty. This is the largest gift of Microsoft shares that Bill Gates has made in 15 years. Prior to this, Mr Gates gave away $16bn in Microsoft shares in 1999 and $5.1bn in 2000.

It's the largest gift of Microsoft shares that Gates, 61, has made since 2000.

As per a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's most recent financial statement, after the most recent donation, Gates' overall charitable donations now account for approximately $50 billion.

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and perennial richest man in the world, has joined Instagram.

Jeff Bezos is back in the game for richest person in the world: Bill Gates just gave away $4.6 billion.

While most still have their jaws laying on the floor at the amount Gates recently donated, keep in mind, the former Microsoft CEO routinely purges himself of portions of his wealthy war chest. Microsoft stock now accounts for just 9 per cent of his overall net worth, which stood at an estimated $85.2 billion, according to Forbes.
