Trump moves to crack down on China trade practices

Trump has also been critical of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).In April, Trump said he had been ready to pull out, but he was talked out of it.

"I think China can do a lot more", Trump told reporters Thursday. "An important question going forward will be whether US companies and trade associations who have highlighted the problem will actually come forward and assist our government in the investigation or whether they will hide the facts, fearful that our government won't follow through, that the Chinese will retaliate against their interests or that they'll have to admit what's happened to their critical assets".

On Saturday, Chinese President Xi Jinping had asked his USA counterpart, Donald Trump, to exercise restraint to prevent a further escalation in tensions in the Korean peninsula after the recent flurry of threats between Washington and Pyongyang.

The White House is stepping up pressure over perceived intellectual-property (IP) abuses, and the administration has, in recent days, proposed fresh duties on imports of China's aluminum-foil products.

While Beijing has promised to open more industries to foreign companies, it also has issued new rules on electric auto manufacturing, data security, internet censorship and other fields. Not even blocking a billion dollar's worth of trade with North Korea.

Trump will today formally order a probe into China's intellectual property practices, though USA officials said it was not linked to the North Korean matter.

Strongly reacting to this, Trump had said that U.S. will retaliate with "fire and fury like the world has never seen" if North Korea continued to threaten the USA or its allies.

China's policy of forcing foreign companies to turn over technology to Chinese joint venture partners and failure to crack down on intellectual property theft have been longstanding problems for USA administrations.

"Most Americans feel that China is stealing our intellectual property". "We will engage in a thorough investigation and, if needed, take action to preserve the future of USA industry", a statement said.

Democrats recently have supported Trump on some trade issues.

The appointment came amid reports that Trump plans to order probe against China's Intellectual Property Right (IPR) violations to press Beijing to do more to rein its ally North Korea.

An administration official contended that the possible investigation was unrelated to the showdown with North Korea.

"But instead of advancing the United States' interests, politicizing trade will only acerbate the country's economic woes, and poison the overall China-U.S. relationship".

President Donald Trump signed an executive order to give the green light to a potential investigation into unfair Chinese trade practices, including the theft of intellectual property, in a move that may eventually lead to tariffs on some imports.

The new order focuses specifically on alleged Chinese theft of US intellectual property, a complaint expressed by a wide array of USA corporations that do business in China.
