Sharif ignores warnings, takes road to Lahore

Meanwhile, another PML-N leader said Shahbaz Sharif, the former Prime Minister's brother and Punjab Chief Minister, will become the new leader of the ruling party.

Sharif was seen off by his successor Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Cabinet ministers, other party leaders and hundreds of his supporters.

Late on August 9, addressing a rally in Rawalpindi, Sharif said the court's decision to disqualify him from office last month over undeclared wealth was an "insult to voters".

Tehmina Durrani, the fourth wife of Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has voiced her protest over her husband being given the responsibility of tightening security measures for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif two-day's rally from Islamabad to Lahore.

The President apprised the Prime Minister of his recent foreign visits wherein he highlighted the grave human rights violations by Indian security forces in IOK. Sharif plans to spend at least two nights in as many cities along the Grand Trunk Road while leading the rally from Islamabad.

Sharif, however, said that the procession was not "a protest" but "a journey back home" that he was undertaking because "risks need to be taken for the country".

Sharif, 67, resigned during his third stint as prime minister after the Supreme Court ruled on July 28 that he should be disqualified and ordered a criminal probe into his family over allegations stemming from the "Panama Papers" leaks of global offshore companies.

Qamar Zaman Kaira of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) said that there could be around 10,000 people with Sharif.

"[I was disqualified because] my son has a company that I never took a salary from", a defiant Sharif said on the eve of his planned "caravan" to Lahore.

Pakistan's ruling party may field ousted premier Nawaz Sharif's wife Kulsoom or his daughter Maryam from the seat that fell vacant after he was disqualified from holding office, a senior party leader said yesterday.

When asked whether the army had influenced the judiciary against him, Sharif said "let's leave this question for later". The general elections in Pakistan are due next year.
