Officer-Involved Shooting In Clinton, Missouri

According to the probable cause report, before shots were fired, Michael was able to give a description of the vehicle and license plates registered to 39-year-old Ian McCarthy.

CLINTON, Mo. (AP) - The Missouri State Highway Patrol says authorities are looking for a man who shot and killed a western Missouri police officer during a traffic stop. The suspect drove about three blocks before crashing his auto and fleeing on foot.

Flags are lowered to half-staff Tuesday at the Henry County Sheriff's Office and underneath, a memorial grows in honor of officer Gary Michael who was shot and killed as he exited his patrol auto late Sunday night. He decided in his 30s to become a police officer and served in Appleton City for a short time before joining the force in Clinton.

Michael is the first officer to die in the line of duty for the department, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

The Clinton Police Department has no body camera policy, but police were working Monday morning to determine if there was dashcam video from Michael's vehicle or surveillance video from nearby businesses, Lowe said.

Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesman Bill Lowe says the driver of the vehicle jumped out and fired at Michael. "He was protecting his community". McCarthy was initially a person of interest in the murder but was deemed the prime suspect by morning. Federal agencies have made informal offers to help but have not officially joined the search, Lowe said. "He was not in that house".

Sergeant Bill Lowe of the Missouri Highway Patrol said the traffic stop was in regard to a registration violation and the vehicles headlights not being on. Local law enforcement has set up checkpoints across and around Clinton.

There is a heavy police presence in the area, about 25 miles away from Clinton. The search all the more hard because few people in the Clinton area know McCarthy and he has no immediate family there, Lowe said. "You want to make sure you keep your distance but contact us".

"He needs to be apprehended before he harms anyone else", Lowe said. He served in the U.S. Army before becoming a police officer. He was a military police officer overseas for about five years before returning to the Kansas City area.

The Henry County prosecuting attorney has charged McCarthy with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, pending his capture.
